RAT at the 2018 Melanesian Championships

The Regional Australia Team did exceptionally well at the 2018 Melanesian Regional Championships which were held in Port Vila, Vanuatu from 9th-11th May.

With a team of 8 athletes, they came away with 11 medals. The Regional Australia Team (RAT) are know for producing great medal results despite the size of the team.

On the whole, the team showed excellent sportsmanship and team spirit. Although the Regional Australia Team was small, they upheld a winning team culture - all athletes ad parents cheered each other on to make the whole experience memorable. 

The results are as follows:

Emma Henley:
Emma still very young in her age group, gained a wealth of experience competing at her first international level meet. 

U18 100m heats: 13.19 (5th)
U18 100m final: 13.31 (5th)
U18 200m heats: 26.62 (9th)
U18 400m final: 1:00.39 (5th)

Natasha Rudder (Team Captain):
Natasha is a specialist sprinter from Grafton, NSW and brought a home a performance when it mattered in the open 200m finishing with bronze against a quality field. Natasha also competed at this year's Stawell Gift where she progressed through to the Semi Finals. 

100m final: 12.85 (4th place)
200m final: 26.20 (3rd place)

Audrey Hall:
Audrey was our flag bearer and was the 2015 Australian Mountain Running Champion. She has represented the Australian Mountain Running team in 2015 & 2017. Audrey's performances improved over the course of the competition, finishing on a high with 1st place in the Open 5000m.

1500m: 5:09.22 (4th)
3000m: 10:54.38 (3rd)
5000m: 18:42.09 (1st)

Carl Hinschen: 
This was Carl's first overseas competition experience. He put up solid performances and just missed a PB in the Discus. Despite being a specialist thrower, Carl also stepped up and ran the 3rd leg in the 4x100m relay team. 

Shot Put: 10.12m (6th)
Discus: 34.70m (6th)


The following athletes were from Arimidale Athletics Club NSW, coached by Jay Stone. Jay does an excellent job of building the sport of athletics in his town of Armidale. Amelia Mazzei:
Para 100m final: 15.33 (2nd )
200m: 30.99 (1st place para)
Para 400m final: 1:09.85 (2nd)

William Vince Moin:
William was a crowd favourite, with every jump and run, the crowd were cheering. He was even asked to do a interview for the local TV broadcasting station. 

Para 100m: 14.49 (4th)
Para Long Jump: 3.59m (2nd)
Para Javelin: 12.71m (4th)
800m: 2:36.06 (1st place Para)
High Jump: 1.34m (1st place Para)

Trent Low:
100m: 11.96 (15th)
200m: 23.35 (12th)

Stuart Geddes  (Team Captain):
800m: 2:02.14 (1st)
3000m: 9:28.00 (2nd)
3000m Steeplechase: 10:11.82 (3rd)
