The North Queensland Games are the largest, regularly run, multi-sport event in regional Australia. The inaugural North Queensland Games were held in Townsville at Easter in 1984 and are now staged every two years on a rotational basis between regions centered around the cities of Mackay, Townsville, and Cairns.
The 2018 NQ Games will be held in the Mackay region 5-7 May 2018. To date there are over 30 sports and an estimated 3,900 competitors expected to participate in Mackay and the surrounding Isaac and Whitsunday regions. The NQ Games will attract a number of athletes from all over Queensland and interstate injecting community and economic benefits into the region.
