As recently foreshadowed, the Board of Athletics Australia has set up a Review Panel, led by independent Chair Chris Wardlaw, to look at all aspects concerning the participation of our athletes at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Full details on the Terms of Reference and Panel composition are available on the AA website (www.athletics.com.au).

The Panel will be seeking the views of all key stakeholders through a variety of communication tools which could range from individual and small focus group discussions to phone interviews and an online tool.

The intention of the Review is to independently assess team performance and all aspects of the support arrangements from selection, preparation and participation at the Games with a view to making recommendations to further improve support for athletes and coaches to ensure the best chance for optimal performance going forward. The Review will cover expectations of the athletes and coaches, whether these were reasonable, and how best we match performance with expectations. The Panel is also keen to investigate whether there were any risks not completely understood prior to the Games and how best these can be mitigated in future teams.

The Panel has a strong sense of urgency. It is currently assessing preliminary Games performance data provided by AA and will complete this analysis in the next few days. Additional information may be sought from AA to ensure the broad objectives of high performance at championships can be reasonably assessed. In the week commencing the 8th September information and feedback will start to be sought directly from all stakeholders including, but not limited to, athletes, coaches, team management, member associations, and AIS and state institutes of sport.

The Panel asks for your patience during this time as the gathering of all information may take up to four weeks. The panel will update on the process in a timely manner via the AA website but certainly no later than 30 September. The process is intended to be open and inclusive. The Panel is approaching this task with no bias. All views are welcome and can be anonymous. Face to face discussions will be treated in the strictest of confidence and will be held in a variety of locations to respect privacy. Naturally, the Panel will be approaching a cross-section of stakeholders, especially those in the Glasgow team and coaches of team members, but given the constraints of getting to key recommendations as soon as practicable, may not be able to interview all parties, but the other methods of gaining feedback will be available to anyone interested, including those not directly in the Glasgow team.

Already a number of individuals and groups have proactively registered their interest in giving feedback. To register your early interest please feel free to contact any of the Panel directly at your convenience. Their details appear below. All discussions will be conducted by Panel members only.
